Shirakawa is born from the intersection of Portuguese heritage and Japanese inspiration. The brand is founded on the roots of a company with over 90 years of artisanal expertise in shoemaking, a legacy of precision, technique, and dedication passed down through generations.

For Sérgio Cunha, this heritage gained a new meaning during a journey to Japan with his wife, a trip that would quietly redefine both his personal and creative path.

During their stay in Japan, Sérgio’s wife discovered and purchased a pair of shoes she deeply admired, drawn to their simplicity and quiet functionality. Upon returning to Portugal, she realized that one of the shoes was missing. What could have been merely a small loss became something meaningful.

Moved by this absence and by the memory associated with the shoe, Sérgio recreated the pair for her, offering it as a gesture of care and consideration

From that moment, Shirakawa was born.

Japan, and particularly the village of Shirakawa-go, revealed itself not just as a place, but as a philosophy.

Amid silent temples, snow-covered mountains, and timeless villages, Sérgio encountered a way of living shaped by restraint, respect, and attention to detail. Shirakawa-go, with its traditional gassho-zukuri houses built in harmony with nature, embodies simplicity, calm, and a deep respect for materials and time — values that would come to define the essence of the brand.

It was also there that a daily ritual became symbolic: leaving shoes at the door and wearing slippers to preserve the purity of the interior. Practical yet deeply spiritual, this gesture expressed care for space, for objects, and for the moments lived within them.

This philosophy continues to guide Shirakawa’s creations, shaping objects that honor presence, intention, and quiet elegance.
